The entrance is at Heinrich-Brüning-Strasse 5, next door to Münster Information. Here visitors can enjoy breakfast served with breathtaking views every day (ex- cept Sunday), sample cakes from Gro- temeyer, the traditional patisserie, or drop in for lunch. There are also occa- sional evening events. Not long ago, two brothers converted one of the oldest half- timbered houses in the city into a wine bar. Lütkes in Lütke Gasse attracts guests with tasty drinks and an ever-changing range of hot and cold appetisers, all served in in- formal surroundings. EXPLORE & ENJOY A place to meet art and people: besides its remarkable collection and impressive special exhibitions, the LWL- Museum für Kunst und Kultur on Domplatz is also an architecturally striking building in its own right, full of spots for Instagram-quality photos and an alluring programme of events. Ever danced in the foyer? We have! TIP 9 Museums cheek by jowl: between Domplatz, the city centre and Lake Aasee, right by the weekly market and the long shopping streets with their cafés and restaurants, Münster’s museums line up one by one like a mosaic: the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, a highlight in itself, is in good company here beside the Westfälischer Kunstverein with its Galerie der Gegenwart, the Geologisches Museum (scheduled for reopening following renovation), the Archäol- ogisches Museum and the Bibelmuseum. The Kun- stmuseum Pablo Picasso is also just round the corner, while the Stadtmuseum Münster is within walking distance too. But what do they all have in common? Besides their fantastic collections and permanent exhibitions, they’re always planning events, initia- tives and surprising activities for visitors young and old, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment! Based in Münster’s Königsstrasse, it holds the world’s largest collection of the artist’s lithographs as well as other Picasso pieces from all his various creative periods. Works by his fellow artists Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró and Henri Matisse are also amongst the treasures of the museum, from which you can enjoy this fantastic view (see picture). explore KUNST & KULTUR EXPLORE & ENJOY As always, central Münster will once again be turned into a unique "show- room" during the first weekend in September, boasting art, culture and enjoyment dotted around the city centre. Galleries and museums stay open late for the Lange Nacht der Museen and put on a programme of special activities, while some squares are turned into extraordinary stages and invite passers-by to linger awhile and see who they might run into. This international exhibition, which has been putting art in public spaces since 1977, is a ma- jor occasion that invigorates the city’s cultural life even after the event itself has come to an end. This is because, even though the works are essentially de- signed to be temporary, many exhibits have gradually been acquired and now enrich the cityscape on a per- manent basis. Some have even grown to become sym- bols of and synonymous with Münster, as is the case with the Aaseekugeln, Claes Oldenburg’s Giant Pool Balls. A sculpture tour of our city is always worth it! Münster resounds with music – every other year, we play host to the Internationales Jazzfestival. It is the biggest regular music event in our city and a real highlight of the international jazz calendar. Through- out the year, meanwhile, various musical institutions such as the Sinfonieorchester Münster, the Westfäli- sche Schule für Musik and the Musikhochschule Mün- ster keep concertgoers supplied with new and ex- citing programmes. Münster’s musical landscape is also enriched by a buzzing independent scene that covers the whole genre spectrum and includes ven- ues such as the Hot Jazz Club by the harbour and the Friedenskapelle. Come and discover your favour- ite sounds alongside some scintillating groups and thrilling events. 12

C l e a h c i M o t o h P EXPLORE & ENJOY A showcase for art: the world-famous painter and sculptor Gerhard Richter gifted his work Zwei Graue Doppel- spiegel für ein Pendel to the city of Münster. Located in the Dominikanerkirche on Salzstrasse, it features a 48 kg metal ball swing- ing on a steel rope over 28 metres long and symbolises the coming together of science and art. This impressive installation is definitely not to be missed! TIP 12 “Curtain up!” is a frequent exhortation in these parts, as Münster doesn’t leave theatre fans short-changed either. Highlights include the repertory Theater Mün- ster, with its not-to-be-missed post-war architec- ture and iconic ceiling festooned with lamps. Visi- tors can also discover the remains of the wall of the former theatre upstairs in the inner courtyard, which is accessible by the public at all times. Also popular is the Wolfgang-Borchert-Theater, which is situat- ed in the stylish Stadthafen quarter lined with res- taurants and cafés. The Boulevard-Theater can be found in Königspassage in the city centre, not far from the multi-award-winning Theater im Pumpen- haus with its international visiting companies and guest performances. It is one of the oldest independ- ent theatres anywhere in Germany. Like many oth- er venues in the city, it also provides a stage for lo- cal artistic groups such as the Freie Musical Ensem- ble, the Theater Titanick and Cactus Junges Theater to attract their audiences and give them unforgetta- ble off-mainstream experiences. Regional and seasonal – that’s how we like it every Wednesday and Saturday at the weekly market in the shadow of the mighty St.-Paulus-Dom. The range on offer is enhanced by exotic items and extras from socks through to salted liquorice. At lunchtime, visi- tors are tempted by Currywurst and fried fish as well as tasty treats from mouthwatering potato fritters to hearty bread rolls filled with pork tartare. You’ll of- ten find long queues forming at the coffee stalls. No bother, though: after all, we enjoy spending time at the market, and chatting with fellow queuers is part of the fun. Whether you’ve come for the sea of flow- ers, the herb stalls, the fish, the meat or the fruit and veg, a visit to the market on Domplatz is a real treat for the senses. And why not try the organic market on Friday afternoons while you’re here? The high-quali- ty produce also attracts the attention of the city’s pro chefs: you can often see them shuffling away from the stalls, heavily laden – and, just a few hours lat- er, hungry diners will be able to enjoy the scrump- tious dishes prepared using all these delicacies. The Astronomis- che Uhr is found near the choir on the southern side of the ambulatory. You really get full value from this short walk! The start point is the 1 St.PaulusDom cathedral. Largely constructed from Baumberg sandstone, the late Romantic structure with Goth- ic annexes is packed with treasures and surprises. Every Saturday and Wednesday, the city’s weekly market is held on Domplatz. Directly opposite, 2 LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur reopened a few years ago follow- ing renovation. During opening hours, visitors can cross the mu- seum foyer – deliberately planned as a passageway linking Domplatz to Rothenburg. From here, we continue along Rothenburg towards Prinzipal- markt. Look out for the little shops and eateries, many of which are owner-managed. These special- ist stores and family-run busi- nesses are often a labour of love. Münster Arkaden, a large mall full of shops and places to eat, is located on the corner of Rothen- burg and Königsstrasse. What would Münster be with- out 3 Rathaus and 4 Prinzi palmarkt, the heart of the Hanse- atic city. Following the destruction of the Second World War, Münster merchants rebuilt these houses and gables. Today it is a place for people to stroll and browse around shops, a place where guests are welcome to enjoy Westphalian specialities in the open air. What’s more, Prinzipalmarkt is quite pos- sibly the city’s most popular pho to opportunity. The historic Rathaus, or city hall, stands in the middle of Prin- zipalmarkt. Also worth visiting is the Friedenssaal, site of the proclamation of the Peace of West- phalia treaties of 1648, which end- ed the Thirty Years’ War after ne- gotiations in Münster and Osna- brück. From here the view of 5 St. Lamberti is unrivalled. The late Gothic church is a striking landmark on our tour; among 22 other things, the three iron cages affixed to the steeple were used to display the bodies of Anabaptists in the 16th century; above this is the workplace of the watchwoman. Behind St. Lamberti, the route continues to the Drubbel, Roggenmarkt, Bogenstrasse and Spiekerhof, circling Dom- platz and taking in scores of small speciality stores and traditional inns. One of the main sights in this area is the 6 Kiepen kerl statue, which symbolises the Münsterland region. Before concluding the tour back at the cathedral, we take a look at the 7 LiebfrauenÜber wasser church, which derives its name from its location. Cross- ing the River Aa, we proceed back to the starting point of the tour, the St.-Paulus-Dom cathedral on Domplatz.

explore YOUTH & SPORT We love to get active. Exercise is definitely a big part of life in Münster, with sport playing a major role and cycling a common form of everyday transport. Münster has even invented its own sport: Speck- brett, which is like tennis, is enjoying another boom at the moment. You will also notice many people play- ing roundnet, a ball game that uses a small trampo- line-like net. We have no idea how many thousand joggers take to the Promenade and do laps of Lake Aasee every week, or how many cyclists get some training in by riding to work on a leased JobRad bicycle (com- muting very long distances in some cases), or how many yoga and fitness workouts are enjoyed on an average day. We do know there are at least 200 sports clubs in Münster with 90,000 members, not count- ing the sport studios, individual sportspeople and, of course, Münster’s many sporty visitors. On top of this, major sporting events draw the crowds, with locals and visitors cheering on their teams – and even taking part themselves, perhaps as members of organisational teams. Münster and the wider Münsterland are renowned for horse riding, with the Turnier der Sieger tournament and the Polo Picnic held here. The region is also making a name for itself as a highly suitable golfing destination. Water- sports like sailing on Lake Aasee and rowing on the Canal complement the land-based options. Year af- ter year, cycling events like GIRO and the Volksbank Münster Marathon – the flagship running event ear- ly in September – attract fans and sportspeople in equal measure. Colourful graf- fiti, groups hanging out in style on street corners, the exuberance of the Kreativkai, bustling restau- rant staff … just come and see for yourself. In the city centre, start your tour behind the main station in the 1 Hansaviertel, a district that is home to many creative stu- dios and start-ups using co-work- ing spaces. Here you will find in- ternational food spots and see stu- dent life, trendy bars and street art. On the north side at the 2 harbour basin, the mix of con- verted warehouses and modern architecture is known as the Krea tivkai. In this fascinating area, the 3 Speicher II building accommo- dates the Kunsthalle Münster, an exhibition space for contemporary art, not far from the award-win- ning Hot Jazz Club and many tempting gastronomic choices – including the Restaurant Hoch- stapler, which serves perhaps the largest range of burgers. As the colourfully illuminated par ty ship MS Günther (named af- ter Günther Jauch, who person- ally christened the boat) does the rounds on the water, we head to the opposite side, the so-called BSide. Industrial monuments, including an old storage silo and a distinctive dockside crane, recall the days when cargo was unload- ed here. Today, the Flechtheims- peicher building houses the Wolf gang Borchert Theater. A short distance from here is the organ- ic dairy of the 4 Hafenkäserei, where you can book a tour, sample the cheese or simply take a seat at a cosy restaurant to watch the bus- ier happenings on the other side. Tracing a slightly wider arc behind the Messe und Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland con- vention centre brings you to the 5 Hawerkamp, an iconic festi- 36 val ground on a former brownfield site. This area is home to artists, an old locomotive shed serving as an event space and a club scene where on weekends especially, people party hard – until the sun rises, in fact. Every summer, 6 Coconut Beach attracts visitors with palm trees and sand. Tuesday evenings are all about ‘Salsa am Beach’. Logically enough, without the 7 DortmundEmsKanal, Münster wouldn’t have a harbour district at all. There are beautiful walks along the Canal, plus a cy- cle path to explore. People come here to have barbecues and un- wind, while rowers train on the Ca- nal year-round. At the 8 twinned locks on the Schifffahrter Damm, two ships can pass through the lock simultaneously, either down- river towards the north or upriver heading south.

You don’t have to walk (or cycle) far to find a relaxing green space in Münster: even in the heart of the city, there are parks and boulevards offering shady leaf canopies as well as relaxing meadows, walking paths, benches and play- ing fields in which to while away the time. The people of Münster love being close to nature; they appreciate the areas of water, and the fact that many zones are now graced with wild flower beds, bee hotels and wild meadows to attract insects. The creation of a natural water playground through renatur- ation on the Westerholtsche Wiese has been a particularly welcome touch. No doubt you have heard of the central Lake Aasee (pictured below), which of- fers a watery surface of over 40 hectares surround- ed by meadows and venerable trees – not to men- tion 10 kilometres of paths and some 90 hectares of natural, environmentally sound parkland. This is the city’s largest recreational area, with many at- tractions – pedalo rental and a jogging trail, the Aas- ee-Terrassen restaurants and sailing clubs, the ‘Weg der Jahresbäume’ (a path lined with ‘trees of the year’) and a natural wetland biotope. For beautiful walks in the city centre, we also recommend the Promenade, a car-free avenue of lime trees heavily used by cyclists, pedestrians and joggers. Tracing the old circular fortification around the city, the Promenade is four and a half kilometres long, and takes around an hour to walk at an unhur- ried pace. It’s also worth walking in sections – to get from A to B, or just to incorporate some greenery into a sightseeing itinerary. From the Promenade, it’s only ever a short walk back to the historic heart of town and its shops and restaurants; many of the city’s sights (including Schloss Münster) as well as play areas and sculptures are just by the wayside. To enjoy the water as well as greenery, expand your radius – your walk will bring you to the Dort- mund-Ems Canal, the River Werse and Lake Hiltru- per See. For some outstanding experiences of na- ture, try the bird sanctuary of the Rieselfelder sew- age farm, which has wooden observation platforms, the Wienburgpark and, of course, the Allwetterzoo in the west of the city. The expanse of the Münster- land, with its castles and forts, offers perfect condi- tions for e-bike riders and other cyclists. The histor- ic buildings, moats and parks are real gems of the re- gion. The 100-Schlösser route is actually four circular routes connecting the most attractive historic struc- tures. In the area between Lake Aasee and the Schloss, the River Aa on the Westerholtsche Wiese was recently reclaimed; now the Aa once again meanders along a near-natural riverbed – a good place to stop and relax. Your short, green tour of Münster ends here – unless, of course, you feel like cy- cling around the Promenade a sec- ond time to return to your starting point. Get on your bike (or rent one; easy enough in Münster), then start your first lap of the city centre from any point on the 1 Prome nade. For the next 4.5 kilometres, you will pass by meadows and waterways beneath a green can- opy of leaves. Enjoy the sight of our mighty trees, but be careful of traffic when crossing roads – cyclists on the Promenade do not have a natural right of way, even if it may seem like they do. One section of the Prome- nade leads by Schlossplatz, where you can enjoy the sight of the Ba- roque-style edifice built by Jo- hann Conrad Schlaun in Baum- berg sandstone. Behind the 2 Schloss is the expanse of the Schlossgarten; the palace garden also has many paths for cyclists to use. In 2019, a BaumErleb nispfad (tree trail) complete with moat, ancient trees and avenues was installed in this natural area. Try exploring the trail. Park your bicycle in front of the 3 Botanical Garden and have a walk around. The beautiful garden has scores of unexpected plants and en- chanting corners. Staff are on hand during opening hours to answer any questions you may have on the crops and plants. Many locals have adopted plants here to support species conservation and research. Leaving the Schlossgar- ten via Hüfferstrasse to one side, you can proceed to 4 Lake Aa see via Himmelreichallee. Some of the paths nearer to the water are reserved for pedestrians. An- nette-Allee for example, brings you to the far side of the lake, where you can access fascinating facilities like the 5 Sportpark Sentruper Höhe, Mühlenhof Freilichtmuseum, Naturkun demuseum, Planetarium and Allwetterzoo. In this area you will also find the Weg der Jahres bäume; the 34th ‘tree of the year’, a beech tree, was planted in 2022. 42 42
