Palaces and castles
Schloss Westerwinkel (Palace)
Schloss Westerwinkel is one of the earliest Baroque moated castles in Westphalia. At the time of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48) a redoubtable moated castle stood here, but in the middle of the century a Baroque palace was built on the island in a complex of moats. The old fortifications can still be seen.
Schloss Westerwinkel is situated in the middle of an English-style park, part of which has been used since the 19th century to grow fruit and vegetables. In the park there is now also an 18-hole golf course with practice areas. The park is open all year round, and the palace can also be visited (advance booking please).
