Enjoy the entertainment in Münster
Versatile, dedicated, and courageous - that’s the way the unique mix of culture in Münster presents itself. What’s it going to be? Theatre, music, literature or the visual arts?
You’ll encounter sculptures throughout the city, since artists of world renown have been gathering here every ten years since 1977 to present the works of art they created specifically for Münster. The skulptur projekte münster ranks among the most important contemporary exhibitions in Germany. Many of the works on display help mould the character of the townscape to this day.
Museums
Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster
Old and new, international and domestic art in Münster communicates self-confidently in a mutual dialogue. Two eminent examples of this are the Münster Museum of Pablo Picasso Art and the LWL Museum for Art and Culture. Furthermore, Münster’s Academy of Arts is producing a young avant-garde that presents itself in the city’s numerous galleries and studio houses or in the Münster Exhibition Hall at the Creative Quai.

The painter and sculptor Gerhard Richter has created a work of art in the baroque Dominikanerkirche (church) in Münster that is sure to assume pride of place on Germany’s map for those interested in culture and art: "Two Gray Double Mirrors for a Pendulum" consists of a Foucault pendulum with a metal sphere weighing 48 kilograms that swings in the centre of the building between four upright, rectangular, mirrored glass panels on a stainless steel cord with a length of 28.75 metres.

Sculptures
Artists of world renown have been gathering together for the skulptur projekte münster decennially since 1977 in order to present their works of art specifically created for Münster. Many of the works on display have been coining the townscape to the present day. These and many more works of art in the public space make Münster a city of sculptures.

Theatre
Wolfgang Borchert Theater
Do you prefer the theatre? Well that’s good, since Münster’s “theatrescape” is extremely diversified. Alongside the classical repertory comprising stage, music, dance, and children’s and adolescents’ theatre, the Theater Münster also has room for the Niederdeutsche Bühne (Low German Theatre). Furthermore, the free scene provides theatre lovers with an extensive programme - from “boulevard” to “vaudeville shows” and “experimental”.

But Münster also has much to offer in terms of music. Besides the municipal symphonic orchestra, there are numerous ensembles under the umbrella of the university and the conservatoire, as well as private ensembles and an outstanding series of master concerts. What’s more, Münster has also been making a name for itself in the field of jazz music – namely, as host of the International JazzFestival, the guest list of which reads like a who’s who of the scene.
The numerous other festivals in Münster promise great cultural pleasure as well, continuously attracting international attention.
