The Kiepenkerl, a true Münsterlander
Münster as it once was: The memorial displays a roaming merchant man in the Münsterland carrying his pannier, the so-called "Kiepe". Typical for the Kiepenkerle was their outfit. Fitted with a blue linen gown, red neck scarf, gnarled stick, and pipe, they walked from farm to farm and from house to house with their panniers. In this manner, they provided for the exchange of goods and tidings between town and countryside in former times.
