Discover the City Museum!
The display collection in the City Museum shows over 1,200 years of city history in 33 rooms!
The museum is located inside a historic building that once was home to a department store. Its façade, dating from 1912/1913, has been preserved. Its centrepiece is the permanent display collection on the first and second floor. It offers a chronological overview of Münster’s city history. Temporary exhibitions highlight specific topics and aspects of
the history of art and culture in Münster.
The history of Münster begins with the year 793 A.D. The tour takes visitors from Münster’s beginnings as the early medieval settlement of Mimigernaford, through its development as a bishop’s see and capital of Prussia’s Westphalia province, to the modern city of the 20th century. Individual epochs and aspects are presented chronologically in 33 rooms. Detailed models of the city and its architecture illustrate the topographical urban development and act as orientation guides.
The focus is on Münster as an early modern city of the Hanse and as a centre of craftsmanship, as the scene of the Anabaptist rule, and as the site of negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia from 1643 to 1648. The National Socialist era and its effects on the development oft he city are the subject of several rooms. Special interior displays such as the Café Müller of the 1950s, colonial goods store Henke and a Biedermeier period chamber, as well as the historic shooting hall from Münster’s fun fair Send, provide insights into the everyday and leisure time life of the city inhabitants.
Some prominent residents of Münster have their own display chambers dedicated to them, such as poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, painter and designer Bernhard Pankok, or the pioneering photographer Friedrich Hundt. Also on display are works of fine art and decorative arts with a connection to Münster, such as a goblet in the form of a windmill that was designed for a drinking game.
