School trips
Are you planning a school trip for your pupils outside Germany? Or is your child due to participate in a school trip outside the German border? In this case, the organisational requirements for children and adolescents who are not German citizens sometimes exceed those for their German peers. It is important to determine whether the children hold a passport and whether they might need a visa, even though their German classmates can take part in the school trip without a visa.
We have summarised some information in answer to these questions for you on this page.
We hope this will make it easier for you to plan your school trip and wish you and your class a safe journey!
Journeys within the EU
It is important to note that both children from a European Union member state, as well as those from Germany can travel to other EU countries easily with a child’s passport or ID card.
Children from other countries usually need a national passport and a certificate of residential status to travel to Schengen states. However, if the trip is to an EU country that is not a Schengen state or the child does not have the required documents, there is the option of the “traveller list”.
The traveller list allows you to cross all EU borders with the children without the need for a passport or a certificate of residential status.
The following documents are required for the issuing of the traveller list:
- For each child: Surname, first name, date and place of birth, nationality, passport photo
- Destination and travel duration
- Names of teaching staff accompanying the pupils
- € 12 administration fee per child
Note to parents: please provide the schools with the required documentation for the traveller list so that your child can take part in the school trip.
Note to schools: please submit all documents for all children who are due to participate in the class trip at the same time. We would also like to ask you to submit the documents to us well before the start of the school trip (14 days before the start of the trip). You can make an appointment with us to collect the list when you submit the documents. The head teacher will confirm the accuracy of the information on the original list by stamping it with the official seal.
Journeys outside the EU
If you wish to take your class on a school trip outside the EU, all pupils will need passports and usually also a visa.
To find out whether your pupils need a visa, please contact the diplomatic mission of the country you intend to travel to with your pupils here in Germany.
You can find an overview of the diplomatic missions in Germany on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
