Humanitarian stays
Many reasons for travelling to Germany exist. In addition to the many people seeking to study or work in Germany, others come to Germany because of circumstances in their home country.
Reasons may include, for example, insufficient medical treatment or the overall circumstances due to a (civil) war in their home country. In this case, individuals may apply for asylum in Germany at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), and may receive a residence permit in the wake of a positive decision by the Federal Office.
Even if the decision of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is negative, it is sometimes possible to obtain a residence permit if you are able to integrate into German life and culture.
The options for humanitarian stays in Germany are explained on the following pages.
Please also note our information on the first page of our webside about the planned reform of the law - the "Chancen"- residence permit with opportunities and the planned changes to §§ 25 a and b of the Residence Act - about which we will provide you with more detailed information here once the reform has been enforced.
