European projects
The City of Münster actively participates in different European projects. Examples:
UP2030: from Münster over Milan to Thessaloniki - transforming cities holistically towards climate neutrality
Duration: January 2023 - December 2025
More than 40 project partners are working together to transform cities toward climate neutrality in this 36-month long project. Among the partners are eight European pilot cities - and Münster is one of them! In these eight cities, the needs, obstacles and the driving forces on the path to a climate-neutral city are being identified and prepared to be replicated in more cities. The procedure is based on the 5UP approach. This consists of UP Dating, UP Skilling, Up Grading, Up Scaling and UP Taking. With the help of the approach, the project partners, led by the Fraunhofer Institute IAO, are jointly developing urban planning solutions and methods based on the values of equity, resilience, neutrality and sustainability.
Twin City Games 2021
"Experience sport together for fair play in an international context" was the motto of this year's Twin City Games in Münster. For the first time since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, an event with real international encounters took place. The anticipation for the event was huge. Some of the foreign guests even accepted a quarantine after returning home. For five days, young people from Enschede (NL), Kristiansand (NO), Lublin (PL), Rishon LeZion (ISR) and Münster exchanged sports and ideas together. In addition to sports activities in multinational teams, there were workshops on the topics of fair trade and fair play. The highlight of the encounter was the sports festival on the sports campus of the WWU. The Twin City Games were organized in cooperation with the City Sports Association Münster and the University Sports Center Münster. The meeting was sponsored by the Minister of Europe of North Rhine-Westphalia through the program "Europe at Home". For the production of the jerseys and gym bags for the participants, attention was paid to sustainability and fair trade. A big thank you to Vamos e.V. and WEED e. V. for organizing the workshops.
European schools – fit for Europe
Duration: September 2020 – August 2022
The project, funded by the EU’s programme “Erasmus+ school education”, aims to provide individual and needs-based support for the teachers of the city’s European school consortium and to develop and expand key competencies relevant to Europe. This project includes a wide range of possible further trainings. Both job shadowing/observations and participation in targeted courses open up extensive opportunities for schools to meet their individual needs. Pascal-Gymnasium, Wilhelm-Hittorf Gymnasium, Gymnasium Wolbeck, Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium, Ludwig-Erhard-Berufskolleg and Bodelschwinghschule are involved in this project.
First training
Cross-border adaption of tactical and technical measures for highly thermal fire operations
Duration: April 2020 – December 2021
This is a German-Dutch project in the context of the Interreg programme of the EU. The fire brigade of Münster and the Brandweer Twente take part as cooperation partners. Moreover, the institute of the fire brigade NRW, the Troned training centre in Enschede, and the International Office of the City of Münster are involved as project partners. The aim is to exchange experiences regarding country-specific operational tactics and techniques across borders. German and Dutch fire brigades sometimes take different approaches in dealing with highly thermal fire operations. Based on this cooperation, each brigade can benefit from the knowledge of the cooperation partner and optimise their own strategy and tactics.
GREHES
Duration: September 2019 – August 2021
This project, funded by the EU’s programme “Erasmus+”, stands for the motto “Green and Healthy Schools” and is the self-chosen principle of the joint educational work of the partner schools from Grindsted (DK), York (GB), Münster (G), and Kristiansand (N). The participating schools have agreed on common educational goals on the subjects of healthy schools, fair trade, and sustainability and integrated them into their exchange programme. As part of the GREHES project, ideas, measures, local institutions, and companies are introduced that promote a healthier, more sustainable, and more responsible school environment. Through interactive workshops and cross-border learning opportunities, participants from each partner school are asked to compare, evaluate, and improve existing concepts and develop new ideas to be adapted to their community. A particular focus is on providing and promoting healthy eating in each school.
COMMON MEMORY for the future
COMMON MEMORY for the future
Duration: August 2019 – April 2021
This is a German-Dutch project commemorating the Second World War and the Holocaust. The project team has set itself the goal of making an active contribution to a lively memorial culture, which also focuses on the present and the future. Thereby, the German-Dutch friendship, which cannot be taken for granted, is intended to be filled with life. Although the physical distance between Münster and Almelo, Enschede, or Hengelo is relatively small, many students do not have direct contact with their peers from across the border. The project aims at creating a stronger cohesion between young people from the two countries. It should be made clear that each individual is responsible for peaceful coexistence between nations. The project, which is funded by the EU’s programme “Erasmus+”, is carried out by Villa ten Hompel in cooperation with the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium, CSG Het Noordik, Synagogue Enschede, Gemeente Almelo and Levend Verleden Oost.
Politics without borders – administration without borders
The follow-up project to “Kenn Deine Nachbarn – ken je buren”, which was successfully carried out in 2017 and 2018, pursues the goal of overcoming the German-Dutch border in municipal cooperation. The project brings together employees and council politicians of the administrations involved for them to get to know each other. Through this personal contact, the participants can gain a deep insight into the respective political and administrative processes. During cultural trainings, they work on the differences and similarities between the Netherlands and Germany. The project provides the opportunity to learn how administration is understood in Dutch and German municipalities and how political decision-making is structured. After participating in the intercultural training, the politicians will continue to work on various topics and experience committees and council meetings in the other country. Thanks to the support of EUREGIO (INTERREG programme), those employees participating in the project have the possibility to experience in person the other country’s administrative system for several days.
Know your neighbours – Kenn deine Nachbarn – kenn je buren
Duration: 2017 - 2018
This is an INTERREG project of the “MONT” cities of Münster, Osnabrück, and Network City Twente, in which 20 employees of the cities think outside the box and find out about working methods concerning the labour market, environmental protection, circular economy, economic development, and urban planning. First, they completed a language course, followed by a conference in Enschede. In a next step, employees will spend a few days at a time in a city in the neighbouring country. At the end of the internships, it will become clear in which fields of work close cooperation and joint projects between the cities would make sense.
