Family reunification
Unaccompanied minor refugees
Unaccompanied minor refugees may be joined by their parents in Germany. The requirement that no parent with the right of care and custody is already living in Germany applies in this instance.
As a rule, it is not possible for siblings to join the family.
Please bring the following with you…
If you would like to apply for or extend a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification with an unaccompanied minor refugee, please bring the following documents with you (if we do not already have them):
- Valid passport
- Current passport photo
- Registration document
- Child’s birth certificate
- Proof of health insurance
- A completed application form
- Proof that you are able to cover your living expenses (e.g. certificate of social benefits)
- Fee: up to € 100.00
Further documents may be required in individual cases. If this applies to you, we will inform you accordingly.
Period of validity
The residence permit for family reunification can only be issued to you for a period matching the validity of your child’s residence permit. In addition, the residence permit can only be issued and extended until your child reaches the age of 18.
Paid employment
Pursuing paid employment is permitted if you have been issued a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification. This means that you can take up employment or become self-employed.
