Medical treatment
If you are coming to Germany for medical treatment, this is usually performed on the basis of a tourist visa. This is issued by the German diplomatic mission in your home country for a maximum of 90 days.
If the medical treatment lasts longer than 90 days, it is also possible to extend your stay in Germany. If you have entered Germany with an accompanying person, their stay can also be extended for the duration of your medical treatment.
We wish you and your family members the best of health for the future!
Please bring the following with you…
If you would like to apply for or extend a residence permit for the purpose of medical treatment, please bring the following documents with you (if we do not already have them):
- Your valid passport
- A current passport photo
- A completed application form
- Proof that you are able to cover your living expenses (e.g. letter of intent, bank statements, cash)
- Proof of your health insurance (if you are not undergoing inpatient treatment)
- Certificate of international patient management
- Fee: up to € 100.00
Further documents may be required in individual cases. If this applies to you, we will inform you accordingly.
An appointment is required for the granting and extension of the residence permit. You can request this via the international patient management scheme. Alternatively, you can contact us by email.
Period of validity
If possible, the residence permit will be issued for the duration of your medical treatment. It is important to take into account how long you can cover your living expenses and how long your passport is valid. Within the first 18 months, the residence permit can only be issued or extended for six months at a time. In addition, the residence permit for medical treatment is only issued for a temporary stay and cannot be extended permanently.
Paid employment
The pursuit of paid employment is not permitted with this residence permit.
