You normally require a valid visa in order to enter Germany. The visa is issued by the German diplomatic mission in your home country or by a diplomatic mission of another Schengen state.
Please consult the German diplomatic mission in your own country in order to determine which documents are required to apply for a tourist visa. Further information is available on the website of the Federal Foreign Office:
Nationals from many countries do not require a visa to enter Germany for the purpose of tourist visits. The Federal Foreign Office has compiled an overview of countries requiring a visa:
Visa – what next?
Once you have submitted all the required documents to the German diplomatic mission abroad, you will be issued with a Schengen visa (category C). The validity is determined according to the length of your planned stay.
Your stay for visiting purposes is permitted for a maximum of 90 days in the Schengen states. This means that you can visit other European countries (e.g. Spain, Portugal) in addition to Germany.
You are not permitted to engage in paid employment during your visit. If you wish to engage in paid employment in Germany, you will usually have to apply for a long-stay visa at the German diplomatic mission abroad.
If you would like to have your visa extended for visiting purposes, this is possible under the following conditions:
- The visa can be extended up to a maximum total duration of 90 days (calculated from the initial validity date)
- You must prove that you can finance your stay. As a rule, your host must submit a new letter of intent.
- You require valid a health insurance policy.
An extension beyond 90 days is not possible for visiting purposes. Overview of the Schengen states
Visa-free visit – what next?
If you are allowed to enter Germany without a visa, you may stay for tourist purposes for up to 90 days. You are free to divide your stay between the Schengen states.
You may not engage in paid employment during your stay.
A stay of more than 90 days is only possible with a visa-free entry if you are also exempt from the visa requirement for longer stays due to your nationality.
