Information in English
War memorials are controversial today. For some people, they commemorate those who died in wars. For some, they glorify war and are considered nationalistic or revanchist remains of ancient times. Most war memorials were donated after the First World War, when many people in the German Reich found it difficult to accept the defeat in the war. During this time they often intended both: remembrance and revanchism.
Several war memorials were added after the Second World War, others were forgotten over time and many of them provoce criticism today. The city of Münster classifies the intention of the war memorials and the culture of remembrance in this context.
